Theme Lighthouse: Jupiter

The closest lighthouse to Palm Beach.  In an area where everything is new, a beacon to remind us that everything isn't.

Shortly after my family moved to Palm Beach, my mother visited the Embassy Travel Bureau to make some arrangements to go to Europe.  The Bureau was owned by Nigel and Yvelyne "Deedy" Marix (Deedy was later Mayor of Palm Beach.)  Nigel, a very proper Englishman, asked my mother, "Have you every been abroad?"

"All my life," was my mother's response.

Our purpose here, as was her's, is to get past some of the hype and stuffiness and to see the place in a different light.

The pieces here are as follows:

Around the Island

Some "miscellaneous" musings and photographs of life in Palm Beach.

Around South Florida

Beyond Palm Beach is a region of great beauty, but one that has suffered much at the hands of its developers. Some photos from the past of landscapes that have dissappeared.

A Royal Visit

Royalty--such as the Duke of Windsor--were and are a part of the Palm Beach scene. This is our exclusive story about a royal visit to our own family.

A State of Being

What can a prominent socialite teach us about the nature of God?  Quite a lot, as it turns out.

The Home Church

A "home church" evokes images of little country churches and fervent worship. Not in Palm Beach.

In the Picture

My mother gets an idea about family portraits.  The cat has other plans.  Find out who wins.

Join the Club (Maybe Not!)

Palm Beach has many unique traditions and customs. Some of them are very charming. Some need to go. This is one of the latter.
On His Level The cat hits the wall. Well, not quite. But he showed us that, to communicate, you must be "on his level."

On the Water

Yachting is an appropriate activity for the Palm Beacher. But it does have its moments.

Palm Beach Golf Classic

A look at a charity event at the Breakers, including some shots of golf greats Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead. We'll also prove to you why Pete Dye courses have so many water holes.

Running Rusty

A lesson from the dog track -- when the demands of life get too high, don't give up -- they'll probably get worse.

Safe In the Harbour -- Barely

Bigger isn't always better, even in Palm Beach.  A lesson from yachting.

When You Need A Native Guide

Walk into any bar and you'll find people who think they know everything.  This is an example of how one bar inhabitant found out differently--the hard way.

Publix in Palm Beach: It?s Still the Event of the Season

Publix Market’s plans to expand/replace the venerable Palm Beach store is testament to the fact that the original opening of the store was The Event of the Season, as I documented in a Christmas 2006 post.  No doubt that Publix has a long way to go in satifying everyone before they start, but there’s no doubt [...]

From Death to Life in South Florida

Following up on an earlier posting, Travis Johnson’s church conducted its baptismal service without interference from the Miami-Dade County Parksand Recreation Department.  You can see his account of it here. Kudos to Travis for his handling of this situation. Bookmark to: Hide Sites

Construction Assistance Vehicle (CAV)

Every now and then, with all of the new technology available, it’s good to stop and take a look back at some things made in the past, not only for nostalgia, but also for possible inspiration for the present. One of those is one that my family business’  West Palm Beach, Florida, facility produced: the Construction [...]

When Grandmother Knows Best in South Florida

Kudos to Travis Johnson for posting this piece: Personally, I think his grandmother had the right idea. Like my friend in Moscow, she knows that "he only understands this." Bookmark to: Hide Sites

Of Course It?s Better to Visit Bethesda!

ACI’s Dr. Philip Turner’s case about Episcopal Presiding Bishop Kathering Jefferts Schori not knowing what she was doing was going pretty well until he said the following: When first I learned that the Presiding Bishop was not going to greet the Pope, I wondered if, because of her gender and her controversial positions on a number [...]

A Place in Church

I was saddened to hear the following news from my home church: James "Jimmy" Heyman spent the last Sunday of his life doing what he loved best — serving God. Mr. Heyman, a longtime acolyte at The Episcopal Church of Bethesda-by-the-Sea, served as crucifer at the May 4 service. Clad in the red acolyte’s robe, he carried [...]

The Strange Position of Carl Hiaasen

It’s hard to know where to begin in responding to Carl Hiaasen’s latest rant in the Miami Herald White politicos have their own pulpit gasbags, but let me begin by making a few observations: Jeremiah Wright has certainly prospered financially off of his ministry activities, as his US$10,000,000 house will attest.  (And he’s done it without [...]

Barack Obama Makes the Shiny Sheet

I guess one can say that he’s arrived now that he’s appeared in the Shiny Sheet’s (Palm Beach Daily News) blog: I wonder whether candidates are fully aware of the depth of their followers’ devotion. Many of these folks waited in line for 2 hours — in full sun and 85-degree temperatures. Then, after passing through [...]

Miami-Dade County and Beach Baptisms: An Update

Lifepointe Pastor Travis Johnson got to meet with Frank Faragalli of the Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Department about their unceremonious ejection of Lifepointe’s beach baptism last Sunday.  This is part of Travis’ account of that meeting. (You can click here for the rest.) It was a pleasant meeting that did not achieve our desired result. Here’s [...]

Supressing Baptism Where It?s Needed the Most

The authorities in the land "where the animals are tame and the people run wild" (South Florida) have struck again, this time by blocking the beach baptisms of LifePointe Church in Homestead.  Travis Johnson is the pastor of this church; you can see his link in the blogroll on the left. You’d think that the police [...]

Is This Any Way to Run an Election?
